Its recommended to keep a short leash and extra eye on our small pets over the next few months.
You can also add reflective silver streamers or a decoy owl in your backyard to distract hawks.
It’s illegal to disturbed hawks or their nests so if you find one in your backyard, it’s best to contact the fish & game department in your state.

Publishers Notes: Our country is still battling COVID-19. To avoid the spread of this virus and continue to enjoy outdoor activities, ALL outdoor enthusiasts (man, woman, child) should follow the guidelines set by nps.gov. These guidelines include; social distancing, the Leave No Trace principles, including pack-in and pack-out, to keep outdoor spaces safe and healthy.
We are entering hawk nesting season around the country and during this time of the year hawks and other birds of prey can be feisty while defending their nests.
Hawks can be very territorial and nesting season usually begins around late winter and will run through the spring.
There is a possibility that a hawk can see a small dog or cat as prey or a threat to their nest if its nearby. They don’t understand it’s a pet and not a food resource or threat to their young. Its also not unheard of for small dogs or cats to be badly injured or even killed during this time.
